On Tuesday, February 3, 2016, God in His divine wisdom, saw it fitting to receive unto Him one of His own, Rose A. Davis, age "94" ninety-four, at the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center in Providence, RI. Rose was born May 10, 1921 in Wake County, North Carolina to the parents of the late John Levi and Lillie Mae (Wiggins) Upchurch. Rose grew up in Wake County, NC where she received her education from Riley Hill and James E. Shepard Schools.
She accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her savior at an early age, was baptized and joined with the family at Rolesville New Bethel Baptist Church in Rolesville, NC. After a couple years Rose moved to Providence, RI and joined in matrimony to the late Edward Clarence Spivey and to this union three children, one daughter and two sons. Rose joined the Ebenezer family where she continued her Christian life on serving the Lord Jesus Christ her savior.
At home in New Bethel Baptist Church Rose and two of her other sisters sang in a choir named the Note Choir which Rose really enjoyed singing. Rose did not like being late getting to Lord's house because she did not want to miss her blessing. She attended service regularly until her illness. Rose was kind, helpful and compassionate. Her love for a garden and beautiful flowers were her passion. Until Rose was eighty years old she would call all her nieces and nephews on their birthday and she'd sing happy birthday. Rose was widowed and later years she remarried the late Josh Davis. One of her favorite songs was "Come On In My Room, Jesus Is My Doctor" and Psalm 23 and John 14, these scriptures would give her so much comfort.
Family members that preceded Rose in death are her parents, the late John Levi and Lillie Mae (Wiggins) Upchurch; eight sisters, Marget, Omalu and baby girl Upchurch, Mary Magdalene Horton, Dorothy Loretta Hopkins, Myrtle Ceal Brown, all of NC, Erdine Clarice Foreman and Luverne Robertson of RI; four brothers, Leroy Frank Richard McKinley, Walter Edward, William Odell Upchurch of NC and Rose's elder son, John Edward Upchurch of RI.
Rose is survived by three children, Clarence, Diane and Melvin Spivey and a lovable grandson, Romas Earl Spivey. She also leaves a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren. Rose is also survived by three sisters, Ruth M. Ferrell, Ernestine M. Elderkin, Josephine D. Harris, one brother, Robert E. Upchurch, all of RI. She is survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend A Home Going Service on Monday, February 8th at 11 am in Ebenezer Baptist Church, 475 Cranston St., Providence, RI. Burial will follow in North Burial Ground, Providence, RI. Visitation will begin at 10 am in Ebenezer Baptist Church.
