Ernest Edward Lacey Sr. was born in Providence Rhode Island on June 23, 1927. He went home to be with his heavenly Father on April 29, 2016. He was the son of the late Sadie Lee Lacey. Ernie was known to his childhood friends as Cuff. And he was married to his childhood sweetheart Eleanor Marie (Lewis) Lacey in 1946. The couple celebrated their forty fifth wedding anniversary just weeks before her passing in 1991. Early on Ernie worked for several companies in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. From 1961-1993 he worked as a grinder at Electric Boat in Groton, Connecticut. There he served as Union Steward and Trustee from 1986 until 1993. He retired in 93' after 32 years of service.
Ernie was a Life time member of Macedonia Union American Methodist Episcopal Church. He served as a former Pastors Steward, Church Trustee, and Church Treasurer. He was a life time member of the NAACP.
Ernest was a sports enthusiast. He tried his hand at golf and enjoyed it. Ernest was a people person. He loved knowledge and engaging in conversations with people from all walks of life. He enjoyed sitting on his front porch holding court with his neighbors and friends and thanks to CNN, MSNBC (his favorites) he was able to keep abreast of politics and current events.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory his six children. Four sons: Ernest E. Lacey Jr. and daughter in-law Sandra, Charles J., Alfred E., Mark S. and daughter in law Thea. All of Providence, Rhode Island. Two daughters: Reverend Eleanor M. Lacey, Barbara E. Simons and son in law Randolph E. Simons Sr. of Providence, RI. He also leaves to morn his four grandchildren Michelle D. Lacey, Tyrone K. Lacey of Providence, RI. Natasha D. Lacey of Preston Connecticut, and Roxanne E. Lacey-Jadama of Pawtucket RI. Seven great grand children Ashley N., Larry M. Lacey of Providence, RI., Leonard A, Jordan X. Lacey, of Preston, Connecticut., Richard A., Robert A. DiRuzzo of Smithfield, RI., Omar Jadama of Pawt., RI. One Great, Great Grandson Laurenz C. Lacey of Preston, Connecticut. He also leaves to mourn, Sister in law Ernestine Lacey of Providence. His special nephews Alfred and Todd Lacey of Providence, RI, Edwin Santos of North Carolina. His Bermuda family: Travis Gilbert Sr. & Lorene, Lori Gilbert, Travis Gilbert Jr., Gracelynn Bremer, Rose & Cofield Robinson, Freda Butterfield, Patricia Butterfield, Lionel & Bonnie Smith, Stacey Todd, Shuntae Todd, Raymeiisha Butterfield, Arrington Smith, and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his sister Barbara Lacey Santos, his two brothers Harold and Alfred Lacey Sr., and grandson Richard A. DiRuzzo Sr.
A Going Home service will be held Friday, May 6th at 12 noon in the Keefe Funeral Home, Five Higginson Ave., Lincoln. Relatives and friends are invited. Calling hours will be held Friday morning starting at 9 am.
