"Chris" 59, passed unexpectedly on November 9, 2010. He was the beloved husband of Jane Wainfor.
Born in Middleborough, MA, the son of the late Clemente and Violet (Haynes) Ortiz. He was a member of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe and grandson of the late Chief Wildhorse.
Chris also known as "Nikana" served in many areas at the RI Indian Council for over 30 years as a mentor and counselor for young Native Americans and their families. Chris starred as Sachem Uncas in the film "Mystic Voices: The Story of the Pequot War".
He is also survived by two daughters, Bethany Ortiz of Swansea, MA and Angela Ortiz of Newport, RI, a stepson, Christopher Wainfor, a stepdaughter, Jessica Wainfor, both of Narragansett, four grandchildren, Jaleesa Hunter, Nathan Major, John Gillard and Kalani Ortiz-Sailsman, two step grandchildren, Gabrielle Oliva and Melanie Wainfor, a sister, Carol Clarke of Tiverton, a niece Wenonah Clarke-Smith and her husband Dennis, and a nephew Glenn Clarke.
Relatives and friends are invited to calling hours that will be held Saturday from noon until 3pm followed by a Celebration of Life Ceremony at 3pm in the Keefe Funeral Home, Five Higginson Ave, Lincoln. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the RI Indian Council, 807 Broad St, Suite 113, Providence RI 02907-1664.
