77, called home on November 17, 2010.He was the loving husband of Sylvia (Brown) Gomes. They have been married for 49 years. Born in Providence of Cape Verdean Heritage, he was a son of the late Francisco and Angelina (Santos) Gomes.
He had first been employed by the Salty Sea Oyster House, then by the City of Providence Sanitation Dept. and as a Longshoreman for over 20 years before retiring in 1993. He was a prize fighter in the middle weight and light-heavy weight divisions, an alumnus of the Fox Point Boys and Girls Club, former president of the IVBA International Veterans Boxing Association, Ring 107.
Joe was a member of St. Martin De Porres Senior Citizen Center and of the Sheldon St. Church, Providence. He was also an accomplished musician and Vocalist.
Besides his wife he is survived by four children, Tina Marie, Joseph Gomes Jr, Michael and Regina Gomes, three brothers, Jack, Charles and Anthony Gomes, a sister, Mary Ballard, 8 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Howard Gomes, grandfather of the late Keith Lewis and brother of the late Thomas, John and Frances Gomes, Tillie Santos, Rosie Santos, and Alice Cardozo.
Relatives and friends are invited to calling hours Sunday from 12 until 2pm followed by a "Home Going Service" at 2pm in the Keefe Funeral Home, Five Higginson Ave, off Smithfield Ave, Lincoln. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be made to the Fox Point Boys and Girls Club Alumni, PO Box 14026, East Providence, RI 02914 and or Sheldon St. Church, 51 Sheldon St, Providence RI 02903.
