92, peacefully passed away at home on January 5, 2014 surrounded by his loving family. Born in Sao Nicolau, Cape Verde Islands, son of the late Bernardo Fortes and Maria Julia Rosario. Pedro was 1 of 8 children. He is survived by his siblings Antonio Fortes, Luis Fortes, Constanca Lopes and Avelina Evora, all of Cape Verde.

Pedro was a police officer in several islands in Cape Verde before retiring and relocating to the United States in 1981.

He leaves behind his wife Trifonia Fortes of Providence. They had been married for over 55 years. Besides his wife, he leaves 7 sons, Joao Fortes and Bernardo Fortes both of Holland, Pedro Bernardo Fortes, Jr. of Cape Verde, Jorge Fortes, Antonio Fortes, Hermano Fortes and Emanuel Fortes. He also leaves 6 daughters, Dorateia Fortes of Holland, Maria Gomes, Fatima Encarnacao, MariaDaluz Fortes, Antonina Correia and Madalena Taylor. He was the father of the late Maria Auxilhadora Fortes, Julia Fortes Moniz and Orlanda Fortes. He leaves behind many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.

Pedro was a remarkable man who was passionate about his family, friends, faith and beliefs. He will be greatly missed.

His funeral will be held Thursday, January 9, 2014 at 9 AM with a service at 10 AM in the Keefe Funeral Home, Five Higginson Ave, Lincoln. Burial will be graveside in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Providence. Relatives and friends are invited. Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 5 to 8 PM.
