Dear Wilmette and Family,
I am sending my sincere condolences on the passing of your Mom Mary. Having lost my Mom Adele last year at age 99 I realize that it is a terrible thing to happen regardless of the number of years we have had their presence.
Please know that I will keep Mary and all of you in my prayers.

Sincerely,
Larry Roberti

Condolence from Marjorie & Katja:

Laurel Thatcher Ulrich wrote the novel,Well-Behaved Women Seldom Make History. It examines the ways in which women shaped history, citing examples from the lives of Rosa Parks, Christine de Pizan, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Harriet Tubman, and Virginia Woolf. All powerful women and I must add Knookie to this list. Whenever, I hear this popular phrase (and book title), I have to smile and can’t help but think of my grandmother. She was a woman born well before her time. Knooke had great expectations but sacrificed much to play the diligent role of the first female born of eleven children in her proud Cape Verdean family. Her father passed shortly after her last sibling was born and she did what was expected of her (like many strong women of that era), but that didn’t mean she didn’t make her opinions known or stopped dreaming or pushing us to excel. She often shook things up and it became the norm for us to expect that from her. Knooke was bright, articulate and ambitious. She instilled her passion for higher education and feminine power by teaching us that we didn’t have to accept any role but the one that we wanted and thankfully, we grew up with her and learned so much from our time spent with her. Katja and I are grateful for all the ways she shaped and changed our lives. When I returned to work from maternity leave in just six weeks, Knookie spent her days taking care of Katja. They had such a special bond that even when Knooke and I were arguing, she’d still call and demand that I drop off her baby. After all, Katja was Knooke’s baby for the first years of her life. There were times when we experienced our struggles like any other relationship, but she did so much to help us that we could never stay angry with her. It was painful to watch such a powerful woman slip away and realize that she won’t be here to consult, laugh or fight with anymore. However, I’m thrilled to know that she will be an angel on our shoulders still guiding, shaping and leading us to become all we can be.
We love and thank you, Knooke.
