It should be noted that you were a Pilot of the Tuskegee Airman in WW11. You were a sparing partner for Joe Louis, the "Black Bomber." You were interviewed by NBC for founding the Black Air Foundation. But, of all of your accolades, to us, was your devotion to family. Your warmth and contagious smile. Thank you for all you have done for women's and civil rights. Your legacy will always live.

“The NAACP-Providence Branch is deeply saddened by the passing of past NAACP- Providence Branch past president and community icon, The Honorable George Lima,” said Jim Vincent, President, NAACP-Providence Branch!
George Lima was a man of the highest integrity, a first in many fields, a distinguished Rhode Island citizen and an advocate for many causes over the past seventy plus years. George S. Lima's story spans 93 years and goes from New England to Harlem, to the Deep South and back. It is the story of a child of Cape Verdean immigrants, a Harlem brown, student at North Carolina A&T, Tuskegee airman, military photographic officer, Brown University graduate, founder of the local chapter of one of the most powerful and prestigious fraternities (Omega Psi Phi), civil rights activist, union organizer, president of the Providence chapter of the NAACP, State Representative, and elder statesman who fought all his life for people's rights in his community.
George Silva Lima was born on April 4, 1919 in Fall River, Massachusetts, the son of Cape Verdean immigrant parents, Anna Morais Silva, a native of Boa Vista, and Manuel Duarte Lima, born in Sao Nicolau. Mr. Lima attended North Carolina A & T College where he received his pilot’s license. He was a Tuskegee airman and a military photographic officer in World War II. He graduated with a BA degree from Brown University, where he founded the local chapter of Omega Psi Phi fraternity.
Mr. Lima was the union representative for the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees – AFL. He was an employee of the federal government for many years in the Office of Economic Opportunity, culminating his federal career as State Director of OEO for the State of Rhode Island. Upon retirement, Mr. Lima entered politics serving as the State Representative for District 83 in East Providence for two terms.
