Those who were lucky enough to know Filomena J. Delgado had to re-evaluate the concept of humanity and family. I am one of the lucky ones to have known her.

To the Delgado family - There is no doubt that your Mom will leave a large void not just in your lives, but in the hearts of all who have known her. Her deep devotion to family and friends had no equal. We will remember her for her kindness, her ready smile, and her disarming humor that lives on through all of you. May she rest in eternal peace.

Dear Vovo ❤️
Even though we didn't see each other that often, I feel like we knew each other well. Dad always talked about you, how sharp you were, how kind you were, and how lucky he was to have such a wonderful mom.
I am so grateful for you, and I hope you are in a better place now. You will be deeply missed! Rest in peace our dear Vovo❤️ Sandra with family

My dear Vovo,
You were not just a grandmother. From a young age I saw how your children looked at you… with amazement, with a look of direction, conviction and with love. A love I felt from my earliest memories. From you. And it never faded. Never forgetting a birthday. Every time I saw you, you made me feel loved by your kind words and hugs. You always asked what was going on in my life. You fed me, you loved me. Loved me like you loved everyone in your world. There is never going to be someone like you. You reminded us what love it. And for that I will forever miss you. Until the day we meet again. I love you forever. Rest in eternal peace my dear Vovo. I miss you. I love you.

For 98 years, Vovo gave of herself. She was not a follower of the world. YAH said, “Do not love the world,” and Vovo lived that. She never wanted a Louis Vuitton bag, she never desired a Mercedes; she didn’t even drive. She never longed for anything attached to the world.

She raised eight children of her own, she raised others who weren’t born of her, but became hers. She loved her 17 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren deeply. Vovo did not love the world; she loved YAH and YAH’s children.

She didn’t give in to the temptations of this life. She never chased fame, fortune, or the praise of people. She lived a life caring for others, and she was the least selfish person I have ever known.

At her wake this past Friday, there were so many people who came not to mourn for themselves, but to honor the impact Vovo had on their lives. That impact was real, and it was lasting.

I met Vovo in 1995, and for those 30 years she treated me the same every day...whether I was in her presence or we were just having a brief conversation over the phone. She was steady, consistent, and sincere.

Vovo lived an amazing life. She forgave those who hurt her, but never called them out. She comforted those in turmoil, and she never judged them. She served everyone first. It always seemed she never needed anything, her only concern was for others.

So Vovo, as so many say goodbye, I say welcome home, where you will finally be waited on. You lived a life few could even begin to walk. The path you walked was the one YAH required of you. You led not by sermons or lectures, but by quiet example. You never stabbed people in the back; you simply hugged them longer.

Your son Denis said it best: Have Mana in your heart every day and around everyone you meet.

Deus contigo.

We had ninety-eight years of grace, light, and laughter.
Here are the 20 things I learned from Maman:
1. Don’t drink, don’t smoke, don’t swear – those are nasty, expensive, and unnecessary habits.
2. Get an education, your life will be better for it and my husband would have called you “muito inteligente” and if you’re calm by nature, “muito calmo e muito educado”
3. Work hard and support your family, it’s your duty.
4. Take time to dance, you’ll only live once, enjoy it!
5. Be honest, it’s makes for a purer life that’s closer to God.
6. Be present, fully present, there is really nothing else.
7. Be devoted to your family and friends, it’s all that matters.
8. Birthdays matter! Because each and every family member matters.
9. Be generous, when people need money, give it to them; it’s what money is for.
10. Laugh often and don’t take yourself too seriously, we’re all dust in the end and soon forgotten. Those pictures of Mana with a stern look, we all knew better, she was within seconds of cracking that crooked smile that we all loved.
11. Be frugal because you want to stand strong and independent and material just isn’t that important.
12. Demonstrate your priorities with your actions, tape pictures of your great grandchildren on the front of your fancy paintings; they are more beautiful than any piece of artwork.
13. Feed everyone you can, and a little more. 3 helpings seemed to satisfy this requirement.
14. Call it the way you see it. She told me I always made her coffee too strong, then smiled… her eyes made me feel like I belonged.
15. Take big risks but, don’t do it alone. I can picture in my mind Mana in a small boat with her young children timing the waves to leap onto the net to take the bigger boat to a better life.
16. There is more here than just this corporeal life. Study the superior forces and spirits that are all around us and learn. And be color blind, pay attention only to the content of peoples’ character.
17. Love your family with all your heart, there is nothing more important.
18. Listen to your children, they truly have your best interests at heart.
19. Handicap parking spaces are free to all after dark. After a long time looking for a parking space with Filo, Mana told Filo to just take the handicap spot, Filo explained this was for handicaps to which she responded, “Ah, aquess que t' sae a essa hora”
20. And lastly, Maman used to come visit us in Cambridge where I had the honor to bring her breakfast, coffee, and tea. She particularly liked sitting in the late morning sun; I think it’s because she was herself, a ray of sunshine.
Beloved Filomena, Maman, TiaMana, Vovo— This isn't goodbye, but hearts that bend memory with love that never dies,
Your spirit lives in all our eyes. Rest in peace, Maman.
