Pete,

I am compelled to write this about your Dad and what he meant to me:

First and foremost, Pete Hoey was a person of character. He stood for so many things, but they all revolved around the simplest of values: faith, family, friends, and living life to the fullest! He didn't need extravagant things to make him happy. Some of the happiest moments came when he had the least. I could sit for hours on end listening to him tell a story from his earlier life, some involved my Dad and my uncles, or other people I had never met. But he would use words, adjectives, that made me live in the moment and feel the passion for the story he was telling. They were often about simple times and ordinary events that for him signified that seemed almost a rite of passage. Every story, the way he told you, kept you on the edge of your seat. Every story had a hidden message about life he wanted to share with us. Those lessons have always made me think long and hard about my own life.

I remember the old panel truck and the many trips to the beach, a ride home from school after baseball practice, or a trip to the Turner's Club. Whenever I would come home, you would take me to Brooksies' and there would be everyone, Joe, Ricky, Kevin McGuiness, etc., etc., and your Dad to celebrate me being back. He never missed one of these engagements, so I came home more and more often, partly because he was buying! When he took sick and couldn't make it to Brooksies', we would visit him at home and, as always, the discussion would center on the Red Sox and Patriots, with him often asking me what I thought of the team's chances this year. We all made it through 86 years until 2004 to see the Sox win the World Series. It was time to celebrate. But, that wasn't the case. We didn't need a special event to celebrate life, we just needed each other. That was all that mattered.

Mr. Hoey leaves a legacy, that stretches beyond his and Mrs.Hoey's (who, affectionately, was his Patty) children to everyone who knew him. I mentioned to you on the phone. A man is measured by two things: the first, how many friends he has and 2) can anyone say a bad word about him. Your Dad had many friends and no one could say anything but good things about him.

God has one more Irishman to deal with in Heaven now. He may have left us physically, but the simple lessons of life he taught us remain forever. May God Bless each of you, as you publicly and privately grieve and reflect on what a great man he always was.
:-)
Matt

I want to thank you, Mr H. When Pete brought me over to your house over 30 years ago, I knew immediately the kind of father you were by the family I met! You were all just hanging out!! Having a few beers, playing cards, Chrissy cracking jokes and Mrs H buzzing about helping and cleaning and taking care of everybody there. You made me feel at home the minute I shook your hand and looked you in your smiling eyes!

You and your family allowed me to share many things in your lives over the years and I will always be greatful for the extended family you gave me.

Your son Peter is one of the finest men I know and he couldn't be the man/husband/father he is if it wasn't for the family you and Mrs H provided him and the way he was raised.

I've often stood back and watched w/ amazement just how close your family truly is. You are a blessed man I dare say that in no small way, I also have been blessed by having known you, my buddy Peter and the rest of your family.

Thank you for everything, Mr H.

Love, Leon

My heartfelt condolences to the Hoey and Holmes families. Mr. Hoey was truly a great man who will be missed by many. The beautiful words written by Matt and Leon brought me back over 30 years ago when I had the pleasure of sharing family time with the Hoey and the Holmes families. Thank you for those memories. May all your cherished memories help you through this difficult time. Yvette (Coulombe) Manning

Dear friends,

Mr. Hoey, my dad's dearest friend....oh how we all will miss you and your Irish smiling eyes.

My dad may think he's the mayor of that hill, but you, Mr. Hoey, were the governor! Your constant happy disposition made growing up on that hill a secret gem of a neighborhood. Everyone of us had a ride in that truck of yours. And didn't we all have a lesson in how to hit a volleyball? We were all blessed to have neighbors who loved us and looked out for us as though we were all part of a bigger family. How lucky we all were!
Much love to all.....Kathy McGuinness Rhault

To my Aunt Pat and my cousins - my deepest sympathies. Uncle Fred, as I knew him, was a fun guy. He always had a big smile and lots of energy. He will be missed, but we will remember all of the great times at Scarborough beach.

He was always Mr Hoey to me, and I remember him most sitting on his shady porch on Resevoir Ave. He was always interested in my travels beyond RI, often asking, how is school, or how is the Air Force, on my trips back to the neighborhood. He always asked about my parents, too. That's the kind of guy he was. A genuinely nice guy. Mr. Hoey, you did well. You left a legacy of good deeds and a good family behind you. Until we meet, again.
