HIS 1954 TRIP TO PORTUGAL
The Portuguese newspaper DIARIO NOTICIAS published an article about my Dad's journey to Portugal in 1954. 📠For those interested in reading the article about the 21 year old Frank please view here:

The Article from Diario Noticias contains an interview and human interest story. Frank while in the military in Munich Germany went on vacation to Portugal to discover his father's birthplace. His father, Francisco Furtado Sariava had arrived to Providence, RI at age 19 on the 24th of February 1916 on the SS Roma as passenger #22 - a farm laborer. Now, 36 years later, Frank Jr. had the opportunity to visit the homeland. Though extremely limited in his Portuguese, with the help of a taxi driver he discovered the hometown. While the cab driver did not recognize family names with an Anglophone accent, thanks to the nick-name of his aunt "Tia Rita a Bebeda" (aunt Rita the lush) they found the tiny village.
As a result of this ABOVE MENTIONED trip, Frank developed a love for the Portuguese food and culture. Thus, on June 24, 1961 it came as no surprise that he married Maria Alda Carvalho a recent immigrant of Feiteiras do Sul, Sao Miguel, Azores. He continued to work along with his father at S&F Concrete Products, INC of Greenville Rd, North Smithfield, RI. He managed the business as president until 2006.
His love for the Portuguese culture that was kindled in this 1953 trip to Portugal, motivated him to expose his son to the culture and language. As a graduation gift he traveled with his only-child Frank Mariano to Lisbon, Braga, and Celorico da Beira. The goal was to introduce his son to the village of the grandfather Frank Furtado Sariava of Soutomoninho do distrito da Guarda. Frankie then made long-lasting friendships (especially in Congregations of LISBOA Chile, Mangualde, Lisboa Leste & Braga Leste). These experiences in turn sparked his son's interest in the language and culture. This also provided the language skills to then visit Portuguese Congregations of Jehovah's Witnesses in the Angolan, Brazilian, Cape Verdian, and Portuguese communities from Portland, ME to Miami, FL to Houston, TX to California.
Frank Saraiva Furtado passed Sunday May 29, 2016 at 8:26am. Calling hours were held on Thursday with the funeral on Friday. The family is so appreciative of the outpouring of support from so many that have called, texted and e-mailed their condolences and encouraging thoughts. We were touched by the visitors that traveled long distances to be with us for the arrangements. (Acts 28:14,15)
