affectionately called "Aunt Jannie" was born on August 24, 1940 unto the union of the late Kemah Krangar Redd and Ambrose Redd, in Lower Buchannan, Grand Bassa County, Liberia.
She spent her early years in Grand Bassa County and later moved to Monrovia, Liberia to live with relatives after the death of her father. She became an entrepreneur at an early age at which time, she own and successfully operated her restaurant for several years. She was a "Prowess" member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Aunt Jannie immigrated to the United States in July of 1975, where she gained employment at the Institute of Mental Health in the State of Rhode Island and served in the capacity as a Chef with distinction. Through Aunt Jannie's life, a common thread remained constant. She was a "Drum Major" for her family, friends and other less fortunate.
She leaves to cherish her memories, two daughters Darthula Hansford Smith (Jimmy) and Yvonne Hansford, two sons J. Benjamin Carter (Victoria) and Nathaniel Carter, fourteen grand children, nineteen great grand children, one sister (Victoria Redd) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and other (daughters and sons) in the United States and Liberia.
She was predeceased by her husband Melton Wright, her parents Kemah Krangar Redd and Ambrose Redd, two sons Ambrose Tubman and James Burgess Carter. May her soul rest in perpetual peace.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 17th at 10am in the All Saints Memorial Church, 674 Westminster St., Providence, RI 02903. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Cranston, RI. Visitation will be held on Friday, June 16th from 6 - 8pm at the church. Relatives and friends are invited.
