of Providence, RI passed away Saturday, February 10, 2018 at age 64. Juan died suddenly at the beach in Florida surrounded by friends and his loving partner. He was born in East Harlem, New York to the late Juan Lopez and Idalia Vasquez. Juan leaves behind his life partner of 10 years Shelley R. Feldman, his son, Juan Lopez III, daughter Justina Pina, son in-law, Julio Pina and their two beautiful daughters, Marianna and Jaylianna. He also leaves his five sisters Iris, Stella, Annette, Martha, Maria (Monsi) and his stepson Luis R. Colon Jr, as well as his children Luis R. Colon III and Anaeliz Colon.
Juan was a beloved and respected member of our community. In 1976 Juan became the first youth coordinator for the RI Coalition of Hispanic Organizations after which he spent 37 years working with low-income families at RI Legal Services. Juan spent many years coaching baseball and on the Providence School Board during the 1980's and 90's.
On September 7, 2008, he drove up to Boston Harbor for a salsa cruise. On that cruise he met his love and life partner Shelley Feldman. He was planning on a two-hour cruise, but instead he got a ten -year journey around the world. The romantic journey he and Shelley took was hectic, but he loved every second of it. In Boston, his days were filled with music, theater and Latin festivals. In the winter, they left the snow for the beaches of South Florida and more festivals including a lifelong dream of attending Calle Ocho. During their ten year journey, he visited places he never imagined he would. Most recently, visiting both Africa and Spain.
Juan was an amazing son, father, brother and human being. He will be missed dearly by all who loved him.
The viewing will be held at the Keefe Funeral Home, Five Higginson Ave., Lincoln, R.I., from 6 - 8pm on Sunday, February 18th.
