On Monday, April 2, 2018 Akintola Olawale Fayanjuola, husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle, passed on to glory at the age of 73.
Akintola will be forever remembered by his wife and life partner, Philomena, their daughters, Foluke, Omolara, and Tolulope, son, Akintola Omowale, son-in-law, Onomen Odafen and his grandsons, Osediamen and Osose Odafen. Broda Akin, as he was fondly called by his siblings, is survived by his sisters, Oluremi and Yetunde; his brothers, Oladapo, Oluwafemi, Tokunbo and Adeoye; and his cousins Emmanuel Abiodun, Kayode, Tope and Akin. He was predeceased by his brothers Akinola, Adesoji and his sister, Adejoke. Akintola will also be remembered by his numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, dear friends and students.
Akintola was born into the royal lineage of the Owa-Ooye of Imesi-ile by Pa Augustus Ajayi Fayanjuola and Mama Emily Omolara Fayanjuola on November 19, 1944. A lifelong philomath, he graduated from Imesi-Ile Methodist High School in his hometown and briefly attended Christ's School Ado Ekiti in 1964. Akintola left Ado Ekiti after gaining admission to the University of Ibadan to study Mathematics in Harding House. He graduated with highest honors in 1968 as a University scholar, taught briefly at St. Theresa's College Ibadan then proceeded to University of Hull in UK for his Master's degree as a Commonwealth scholar. Akintola returned to join the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) to serve as a lecturer in the Department of Mathematics in 1971.
Akintola met the love of his life, Philomena, while teaching at St. Theresa's College and married her in 1974. The growing Fayanjuola family travelled to the US so Akintola pursue advanced studies at Brown University on a US Aid scholarship. He completed his third Master's degree at the University of Rhode Island before rounding out his career as a quintessential teacher and passionate education advocate. Akintola taught at the University of Rhode Island, Rhode Island College, City College of New York, and Hostos Community College. Nicknamed "Mr. F." by his many students, Akintola also taught in the Providence School Department, finishing his career at Classical High School.
A long-time resident of Providence and active community supporter, Akintola was a founding member of the Yoruba Elders and a congregant of Christ Miracle Church. With his very amiable personality, Akin exuded exceptional ardor and geniality with those he met without any air of discrimination. As a result, he made friends everywhere he went. His heartfelt belly laugh, engaging and dry humor, sharp wit and lively anecdotes will be fondly remembered by his family, friends and many students across the globe.
A celebration of his life will be held at a Christian wake-keeping on Friday, April 20, 6-9pm & a funeral service on Saturday, April 21, 10 am at Keefe Funeral Home, 5 Higginson Ave, Lincoln.
