79, of Pawtucket, passed away in the loving arms of
his daughter on September 24, 2010. He was the son of John and Bertha
(Bradley) Galligan, and husband of Jennie (Trembley) Galligan, to whom
he was married 57 years.
James served in the United States Army and was a Korean War Veteran.
He began his career with the Central Falls Police Department in 1964,
rose to the position of Police Chief in 1977 and retired in 1986.
James was a graduate of Salve Regina University, where he received a
B.A. in Law Enforcement. He was past president of RI Police Chief's
Association and member of the Fraternal Order of Police; VFW Post
1822, Plymouth, Massachusetts; American Legion Post 79, Central Falls
and the Pawtucket Elks.
James and his wife Jennie summered in Plymouth Massachusetts and
wintered in Daytona Beach, Florida. His dear friends in Plymouth
Massachusetts, Daytona Beach, Florida, and his golfing buddies at
Stone-E-Lea Golf Course will be greatly missed.
James is survived by his son, James Jr. and his wife Diane of
Scituate, R.I.; daughter Karen Mellen and her husband Robert of North
Kingstown, R.I.; grandchildren: Christine Santagate, Kathleen and
Karen Galligan; Stephen, David and Lauren Mellen; and one great-grand
child who will be born in October.
He leaves one sister June Peltier, Lincoln, RI and is pre-deceased by
his brothers John and Harold (Bob), and sisters Ruth Gorman, Irene
Mills and Helen Taylor.
Visiting hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 29,
2010, in the Keefe Funeral Home, 5 Higginson Avenue, Lincoln, RI,
