Shom passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones after complications with Bone Cancer at The Miriam Hospital in Providence RI at the age of 70.
Shom was born in Dayton, Ohio on July 8th, 1950 to the late Theresa"Young" & Ell Johnson.
Shom received his GED in the 1980’s. He was a member of the Amos House community where he was an advocate for the homeless and people struggling with addiction. At the Amos House, Shom sponsored recovering addicts in their recovery process. Shom loved spending time with his family. That was his first love. He also loved to dance and his music. He loved to write poetry. He wrote: Lord why did you make me Black and God’s Reply. He participated in the fine arts as well as performing in theater plays. His favorite meal was spaghetti and meatballs. Shom was a fantastic, loving brother. Shom wanted to beat Cancer with the hope of seeing his son Shom Jr released from a life sentence, he almost made it to that day.
Shom leaves fond memories in the hearts of his wife Kate Poku of Providence, RI. His children Lisia White, Schenectady NY; Donna Tuner, Danzell, South Carolina, Sonya Sowell, Oakley, California; Simone Lee, Providence RI; Tshombe Johnson Jr, Boston Mass; Shombra Judd and Joseph Poku of Providence, RI. His siblings, Sherman Johnson, California; Theresa Young of Fall River Mass; Reneitia Foreman, Providence RI; Zshonelle Solomon, Warwick; RI, Donti Johnson, Battlecreek, Michigan; Tania Harris, Kingsville, Ohio; Shonna Johnson, Ayonna Lassiter of North Providence RI; Joseph Johnson of Fall River Mass and Zshonelle Johnson of Pawtucket RI. He leaves 11 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. He is proceeded in death by his siblings, Robert Bobby Johnson, Shirlene Watts, Ell Johnson, Renee Johnson, Lynnette Johnson and Eugene Gino Johnson.
Funeral service is scheduled for Wednesday October 21st, 2020 with the viewing from 10am to 11am service 11am to 12pm at Keefe Funeral Home Five Higginson Ave, Lincoln, RI 02865. Interment will be at North Burial Ground, 5 Branch Ave Providence RI following the ceremony. Live stream will be broadcasted via Keefe funeral home at www.thekeefefuneralhome.com Due to the guideline set forth by the Governor of Rhode Island, we will not be having a repass at this time.
