William H. Clay, 94, of West Greenwich passed away peacefully at home on November 26, 2020. He was the husband of Beverly M. Clay. Born in Washington, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Hubert and Myrtle Clay.
He is survived by his sister Dallas Scherer of Bushnell, FL; his daughters Jessica Armstrong and Bethanie Ericsson; sons Dana Clay and David Clay; and step children Bonnie MacRitchie, Brenda MacRitchie and Dan MacRitchie. He was predeceased by his daughter, Victoria Libby.
He served in the US Navy during World War II and had a long career in electrical engineering. After retiring from Raytheon in 1988, he designed and built with his wife their beautiful home in the woods of West Greenwich. He served 10 years on the school committee of the Exeter-West Greenwich Regional School District authoring numerous school policies and procedures. He participated in many state and local community activities.
Bill was known for his dry wit and rascally sense of humor. He never lost his southern roots and old fashioned manner. He was a life-long fan of classical music and opera and enjoyed an annual trip to the Glimmerglass Festival in Cooperstown NY. He enjoyed traveling, tent camping, hunting, flying, archery, and gunsmithing. He was a ham radio enthusiast communicating daily with folks around the country. He spent many Wednesday afternoons playing chess at the Pilgrim Senior Center in Warwick.
