William G. Johnson, 99, passed away January 9, 2021, in Pawtucket. He was the beloved husband of the late Jeannine (Berthelette) Johnson. Born in West Warwick, he was the son of the late William J. and Albertha H. (Richard) Johnson. He leaves behind five children, Raymond Johnson, Claire Ledoux, Ann Bonin, Judy Cloos, and Susan Kelley, twelve grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He was the brother of the late Gertrude Jarbeau, Margaret Tougas, and Richard Johnson. He worked at White's Foundry and Narragansett Gray Iron Foundry as a coremaker until he retired. William was a U.S. World War II veteran assigned to the Army Corps of Engineers, 342nd Engineer Regiment. He was attached to the 82nd Airborne Division, and the 101st Airborne Division at the Battle of the Bulge where he was held back to assist in the detonation of a bridge. He was stationed in England, France, and the Netherlands and was on security detail in Normandy. He deeply loved his family and country. His family brought him much happiness.
William spent most of his life in Pawtucket. He lived his final years at the Little Sisters of the Poor Jeanne Jugan Residence Home. His family is eternally grateful for the Sisters and staff at the home, who did everything they could to bring him comfort and joy. He was a parishioner of St. Raymond’s Church in Providence.
William’s family is deeply saddened by his loss, but so grateful for the role he played in their lives and his service to the country. In lieu of flowers, please direct donations to Little Sisters of the Poor Jeanne Jugan Residence Home in Pawtucket.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, January 15th at 10 a.m. in St. Raymond's Church, 1240 North Main Street, Providence. Due to Covid restrictions, seating will be limited. The Mass will also be streamed live via St. Raymond's FaceBook Page. Interment with his late wife in Notre Dame Cemetery will be private.
