Juanita Thompson
April 2, 1934 - March 19, 2021
Juanita Thompson, born April 2, 1934, made her transition from earthly life in Providence, Rhode Island and returned Home to God on Friday, March 19, 2021. She was born and educated in Jackson, Tennessee where she began her journey as a mother, an African-American political activist and social worker.
Juanita received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Tennessee Agricultural & Industrial State College, a land grant Historically Black College [HBCU] currently Tennessee State University. After graduation, along with her children, she settled in Yonkers, New York where she was employed by the Westchester County Department of Social Services, retiring after 27 years of service as a Supervisor Examiner. During her time in Yonkers, NY Juanita served as President of the Westchester Section of the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW); and later as President of the Hudson Valley Section of the NCNW. She was also the long-time Treasurer of the Yonkers Branch of the NAACP; a lifetime member of the Yonkers YWCA and President of its Board of Directors.
Juanita was also active in Christian Church work: She joined Messiah Baptist Church in Yonkers, New York in the 1950s, and was a choir member, Christian Youth Education Leader, Church Clerk and member of the Board of Trustees. When she relocated to Central Falls, Rhode Island to live with her daughter, Dr. Clarice LaVerne Thompson, she joined Bethel AME Church, [Pastor Rev. Howard M. Jenkins Jr.].

Preceding her in death are Juanita’s parents, Bishop Thompson and Mattie Thompson nee Woodson; her brother Robert Thompson, and beloved aunts Velma Thompson and Alma Woodlin. Surviving are daughter Clarice LaVerne Thompson, son Anthony W. Thompson and wife, Alfonsa, and their children Ashley, Christopher and Brandon; granddaughter Nicole; nieces Sherrell Farmer and husband, Derryle; Deirdre Thompson and husband, Malik Sullivan; great nieces and nephews: Cameron Farmer and wife, Taycia, Camille Farmer, Shanee’ S. Galloway and husband, Alexander, and Wesley Sullivan; and a host cousins and beloved extended family members.
