We regretfully announce the passing of Ama Amponsah on April 4th, 2021 which was not only
Easter Sunday but also her birthday.
Ama, was one of the most loving and awe-inspiring women to walk this earth and we were
infinitely blessed to have her as the head of our family. The epitome of style and grace, Ama
was a brilliant business woman and community advocate and representative. Her love of her
community was her driving force. She proudly served as Pawtucket's sergeant at arms, for eight
years and won the District 5 Council seat last year and began serving in January.
As a mother, she was so renowned that she was appropriately dubbed “Mama Ama” by her
entire community. Originally hailing from Ghana, West Africa, in 1979, she met the love of her
life and forever partner, Isaac Amponsah. They traveled the world before settling in RI. He gave
her her greatest gifts, their three children and her other pride and joy, Ama’s Variety. A birthday
present from her doting husband, Ama spent nearly 40 years, raising generations of
neighborhood children as if they were her own. Her commitment to her faith was only rivaled by
her dedication to her loving husband and children.
We will never be able to fill the space left behind by her.
Ama was predeceased by her father, Martin Owusu Mensah and her mother Victoria Addo and
is survived by her loving husband Isaac Amponsah, her daughter Alethea Amponsah, two son’s
Isaac Jr. & Germain Amponsah and countless family, friends and community members who
loved Ama very much. Visitation will be held on April 16th from 3pm until 7pm at The Keefe Funeral Home, Five Higginson Ave, Lincoln.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, April 17th at St. Mary’s Church, Pine St., Pawtucket at 11am for up to 200 masked attendees. All services on Saturday begin at the church. Burial will follow in Swan Point Cemetery, Providence.
