Born in Pawtucket, RI she was the daughter of the late Henry and Mary (Lewandowski) Sacchi.

A talented ice skater, Joan skated in competitions all over New England. At the age of 15 her family moved to Webster, New York where she trained and skated for the Rochester Figure Skating Club. After graduating from Thomas High School in Webster, she returned to Rhode Island and became an ice-skating instructor.

She then went to Rhode Island Community College and after graduation worked as a respiratory therapist until her MS made it impossible for her to continue.
