of Swansea and Chatham, MA, passed away peacefully on February 10, 2011, in Providence, RI. Born in Quincy, MA on March 4th, 1933, Peggy (as she was known) was the daughter of the late James and Ethel (Cochrane) Hunter and the sister of the late John Hunter. When she was 15, Peggy moved to Larchmont, NY, where she instantly attracted the attention of the boy next door, Peter Hallock, who deemed her "the smartest, most beautiful girl he'd ever seen."The two were married in 1953, and enjoyed many happy adventures together, especially on Cape Cod, where they surf-cast on Monomoy, bounced over the dunes in a Model A Ford beach buggy, and built a camp on Nauset Beach.
After graduating from Briarcliff College, she moved to Rhode Island and helped her husband found Gripnail Corporation. She also worked with children at Meeting Street School in Providence.
A highly creative person, Peggy loved to garden, knit, and bake (especially her famous Scottish shortbread cookies). She was an accomplished artist, who brought a vibrant sense of color to her paintings, and was a longtime member of the Westport Art Group, the Chatham Creative Arts Center, the Fortnightly Club, the Swansea Garden Club, and the Women's Union of Fall River, whose mission to aid underprivileged women and children was dear to Peggy's heart.
Besides her devoted husband of 58 years, she leaves her daughter, Ann Beveridge Hallock, her son-in-law, Kevin Markey, and her two adoring grandchildren, Nat Hunter Markey, 9, and Sarah Beveridge Markey, 7. Peggy was a kind and generous person, who loved to laugh and talk with friends. She will be missed by all who knew her.
Her funeral will be private, but a gathering to celebrate Peggy's life will be held at a later date, to be announced, in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to The Women's Union of Fall River, 101 Rock Street, Fall River, MA 02720.
