Pao Ge Yang, 55, of 7 Mill Road, a retired Sergeant of the Providence Police Department, and an active officer at Brown University died on Monday, January 9th. He was the husband of Chow Moua born in Laos, son of the late Nou Vang “Tony” Yang and La Xiong Yang. He also leaves behind his aunt, Za Yang.
He had lived in Providence for 21 years and Foster for 21 years.
He became the first Rhode Island Hmong police officer in 1994 serving a total of 25 years in multiple departments of the Providence Police. He started as a patrol officer then an officer of the Mounted Command. He loved being an officer of the Mounted Command, most importantly working with the horses especially his own mount, Texas. He became a detective in BCI and scuba diving team. He then moved up and became a Sergeant and then retired from the Providence Police. He was active as an officer on duty with Brown University just until he fell ill.
Besides his wife, he leaves one son, Brian Fwj Chim Yang and three daughters, Choua Cassandra Yang, Mai-La Rose Yang, and Gao Hli Emillie Yang of Foster, RI and her husband Houa Her of Brooklyn Park,. He also leaves three brothers, Lee Yang of Wawsau, Ger “John” Yang of Orange County, Ezekiel Yang of Lincoln: Six sisters, Chai Kue of Hope, Nou “Elizabeth” Yang of Philadelphia, Song “Kelly” Makowski of Harrisville, Yer “Melissa” Thao of Cranston, Tang Yang of Pawtucket, and Mary Yang Morris of Warwick.
The service will be held in Keefe Funeral Home, 5 Higginson Ave., beginning on Saturday January 21, 2023 and on Sunday January 22, 2023 from 12pm-8pm. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, January 23rd at 10am in St. Michael Church, Oxford St, Providence. A funeral procession with police escorts from the church to Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Riverside will follow.
