Louis (Lou) Joseph Martin, 91, of Pawtucket, RI, passed away on October 28, 2023, at the Miriam Hospital in Providence. He was the beloved husband of Shirley Ann (Voyer) Martin.
Born in Lincoln, RI, he was a son to the late Torcato and Lucy (Sousa) Martin, on September 15, 1932. Louis attended Pawtucket West High School. He enlisted in the United States Army, where he achieved the rank of Sergeant 1st Class and is a Purple Heart recipient. Louis also received many medals and badges for his service in the Korean War including a Bronze Service Star.
Louis worked for many years as a Service Manager for several new car dealerships throughout Rhode Island. He became a partner at Blue Ribbon Transportation Company before returning to close out his working career as a service manager once again. Louis enjoyed watching the Red Sox, the Patriots and the PC Friars. He took great interest and pride in watching his children play sports from minor league baseball through high school and college football. He especially loved playing baseball in the backyard with his sons. Despite working long hours, Lou never missed any games and attended most practices. Louis served seventeen years as a Commissioner and Vice Chair of the Pawtucket Housing Authority. He also was elected the Chairman of the Pawtucket Democratic City Committee. Louis was a member of the Portuguese Social Club and a long-time member of the Kennedy Collins Post. Louis also served as Eucharistic Minister at St. John the Baptist Church.
Mr. Martin is survived by his loving family, wife Shirley, his children Jeffrey Martin and his wife Elizabeth, Gary Martin, Wendy Rainone and her husband Kevin, and Jay Martin and his wife Annie. He also leaves 11 devoted grandchildren and 3 cherished great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his sister Dolores Rodrigues.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at St. John the Baptist Church, 69 Quincy Ave., Pawtucket, RI, on Friday, November 10th at 11:00AM. A private inurnment with military honors will take place at the R.I. Veterans Memorial Cemetery on Saturday, November 11, 2023. Visitation is respectfully omitted.
