Calvin Kwesi Anderson was born January 9th, 1977 in Liberia, Africa and at a young age, he
emigrated to Rhode Island with his family, where he lived for the remainder of his life. As a child, he attended St. Theresa’s School. He attended Classical High School and remained a proud Classicalite throughout his years. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Rhode Island College, where he was able to build and refine his love for music in all its forms. DJ C-Smoothe, as he was known professionally, played local parties and worked the campus radio station. Known for his hearty laugh, affectionate demeanor and infectious smile, Calvin was a friend to all those he came in contact with. He was kind, compassionate, honest, and had a great sense of humor. Although he did not love attention, he could certainly be counted on to be the life of
the party. He loved to dance, enjoy good music and spend time with those who filled his cup. He combined his love for music with his brother, Kenny, and their friends, Preston and Prince, to form the group REZIZTANZE, where they performed and earned the respect of many of those who appreciated their love for hip-hop and how it can bring people together. Beyond his love for music, Calvin was known to participate in a rousing political debate with anyone who’d engage and talk about sports, specifically his fond love, appreciation, and devotion to the New England Patriots and Tom Brady.
Calvin was definitely the calmest of the three siblings. Despite being the oldest and the smallest, he had the biggest heart. The bond with his siblings cannot be accurately described in words and although one piece is missing, the bond is stronger than it has ever been. Of his proudest achievements, his greatest joy in life was the birth of his son and only child, Michael. The joy of being a father and the love he had for his son knew no bounds. At any opportunity, he loved to talk about his son, what he was doing, and worked hard to be the best father he could. His son was his life, his reason for being and the fuel to his fire.
In addition to his son, Michael, his pride and joy, Calvin leaves to mourn his mother, Elaine, his siblings, Kenneth & Victoria, his sister-in-law Ranita, his cousins Princess, Tony, Anthony, and Jordan, who was also his godson, and a countless number of relatives and treasured friends, who were with him through his challenges and never wavered from his side. He was predeceased by his grandmother Caroline R. Andrews, his uncle Adam O. Effiom and his great-aunt Annie Bell Andrews.
A wake will be held on Wednesday, November 15th at Keefe Funeral Home, 5 Higginson Avenue in Lincoln, RI from 5-8pm. A funeral will be held at the same location on Friday, November 17th at 10am. The family will hold a private burial.
