Gerard L. Tougas, 90, of Cumberland, passed peacefully on June 20th at Landmark Hospital. He was the beloved husband of the late Therese (Laboisonniere) Tougas for 58 years. Born in Central Falls, he was a son of the late Leo and Jeannette (Moreau) Tougas.
Gerard was employed at the Continental Baking Company for many years before retiring. He was a proud U.S. Navy veteran who served during the Korean War, demonstrating his dedication and bravery in service to his country.
Gerard was a communicant of Historic St. Joseph Church, where he was as a eucharistic minister, a testament to his enduring faith and service. He was a dedicated member of the Knights of Columbus, where he served as the past Grand Knight of the Lincoln chapter.
Beyond his work and community involvement, Gerard found peace and pleasure in his family and friends, cherishing afternoon card games with Norman, Michelle, and the CNAs. He loved playing Hi-Lo Jack and cribbage, affectionately calling it "libation time", while he relaxed with a beefeater gin martini, savoring these moments of joy and companionship that kept him young and vibrant. He was also an avid New England sports fan, passionately supporting his favorite teams and enjoying the excitement of the games.
He is survived by two siblings, Norman Tougas and Estelle Fugere; five nieces and nephews, Steven Tougas, Richard Tougas, Allen Tougas, Jean Gilchrest; Diane Sawyer; several great-nephews and one great-niece. He was the brother of the late Alfred Tougas, Madeleine Tougas and Muriel Turgon.
His funeral will begin at 8:30am on Thursday, June 27th from Keefe Funeral Home, Five Higginson Ave., Lincoln, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am in Historic St. Joseph Church, 1303 Mendon Rd., Cumberland. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Notre Dame Cemetery, Pawtucket. Visiting hours will be Wednesday, June 26th from 4:00 – 7:00pm.
