Life is a beautiful journey and it has its cycles; birth, infancy, childhood, adolescence, early adulthood, middle age, late adulthood, and end of life which is called death. On June 29th, 2024 Maria De Fatima Monteiro Barbosa Amado, mostly known by “Titia”,concluded the last cycle of life. She peacefully passed away, at home, in Pawtucket, RI.
Born on June 1st, 1933, in the village of Curral Grande on the island of Fogo, Cape Verde. Maria De Fatima “Titia” was the third out of eleven siblings. She was the daughter of Maria Nascimento Monteiro and Joao Pina Pereira. Titia grew up and established roots in her village. Later in life, she met and married her husband, Joaquim Barbosa Amado, known by friends as “Djoca”. Together they shared eight children.
Titia was a devoted wife, a loving mother to her children, and a caring grandmother. Her role as a housewife was central to her identity. Titia was the heart of her family. Her top priority was to make sure that everyone felt loved and cared for; and she made sure that she instilled those two core values to her family, especially her children. In addition to her role as a stay-home-mother/wife, she enjoyed listening to morna, being outdoors, and spending time with families and friends.
Her tall height and firm walking translated confidence. Her gentle voice made one run to her as she always had some good advice to share (conselho). Her hands were always open to help and her feet were always ready to run to anyone in need. Titia was an advocate for the right things. The family often made jokes calling her a “lawyer” because she liked to advocate not just for herself but for others. Titia – beautiful on the inside and out.
Maria was preceded in death by her dear husband Joaquim, cherished daughter Maria Cecília Amado, loving parents Maria and João, esteemed siblings Jerónimo Monteiro, Francisca Monteiro, Nataniel Monteiro, Maria De Pina, Natalia Monteiro, Alberto Monteiro, and Joaquim Monteiro.
She is survived by her loving children Maria Alice Amado, Maria Amelia Barbosa, Maria Conceição Amado, Maria Graça Barros, Luísa Helena Amado, Joaquim Pedro Amado, and João Agostinho Amado, dear siblings Maria Livramento Monteiro and Ivone Monteiro, esteemed grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
