Soo-Dip Chin, 95, of Providence RI, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family and friends on Saturday September 28, 2024.
Soo-Dip was born in Canton, China on September 17, 1929, to Jung-Fook Chin and Shue-Fong Wong. He was a devoted husband to the late Lai-Fong (Cho) Chin and a loving father to David, Susan, and Lucy.
Soo-Dip came to the United States at the age of sixteen. He is a graduate of Central High School in Providence. He continued his education at the Rhode Island School of Design and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Architecture in 1959.
Soo-Dip served the city of Providence for 31 years from February 1961 until his retirement in July 1992. He was the Supervisor of Project Planning with the Department of Planning and Development and the Providence Redevelopment Agency. During his tenure with the city, Soo-Dip worked on numerous projects regarding redevelopment planning and regulations. He exemplified public service through his meritorious dedication, selfless devotion and professional attitude. He was a proud member of Public Employee’s Local Union 1033 and recently received his gold 50 year membership card and certificate from the Laborer’s International Union of North America.
Soo-Dip was an amazing individual. He was a man of knowledge, integrity, respect, kindness, and generosity. He had a calm, quiet and respectful demeanor, along with a dry sense of humor that left a lasting impact on everyone that knew him. He was an incredibly talented artist and calligrapher, avid reader, and possessed a wealth of knowledge on a huge variety of topics. Soo-Dip loved music and was especially fond of Big Band Era music, Frank Sinatra, and Cantonese Opera. He was an avid photographer, capturing portraits and snapshots of his family. He was also a passionate collector of stamps and coins.
The center of Soo-Dip’s world was his family. From working at the family restaurant after classes as a teenager, to cooking phenomenal Chinese dishes every night for his wife and children, to showering all of his grandchildren with unconditional love, Soo-Dip was a role model and the patriarch of the family. His dedication and devotion, wisdom and strength, patience and trust, and unwavering love will be his legacy.
Soo-Dip is pre-deceased by parents Jung-Fook Chin and Shue-Fong Wong and his wife Lai-Fong (Cho) Chin. He is survived by his three incredible children: David Chin (Carol Chin), Susan Chin (Sherry Lusiak), Lucy Chin Bellone (John Bellone). He is also survived by his wonderful grandchildren: Rebecca Leigh Chin (Kevin Barger), Catherine Lee Bellone, John Frankie Bellone, Andrew Joseph Bellone, Keegan David Lusiak (Marina Lusiak), Jensen Reese Lusiak, Connor Lusiak-Chin, Jaxson Lusiak-Chin.
Calling hours will be held on Saturday, October 5, from 10:00AM-12:00 Noon with a service from 12:00 Noon to 1:00 PM at Keefe Funeral Home, 5 Higginson Ave, Lincoln, RI, Procession for interment at Swan Point Cemetery, 585 Blackstone Blvd, Providence, RI, immediately following conclusion of service. Collation following conclusion of interment at Angelo’s in Cumberland RI (133 Mendon Road, Cumberland, RI).
