Central Falls, RI - Stella G. (Collette) Sweet, 103, of Central Falls, left this world peacefully on Thursday, October 17, 2024, at Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Providence after a brief illness.
Born in Central Falls on July 5, 1921, Stella was the oldest of ten children of the late Adolphe Collette and Gertrude (Baris) Collette. She was the wife of the late Harold Raymond Sweet, and the late Raymond C. Peloquin.
Stella grew up in Central Falls and Pawtucket, and was educated at St. Cecilia School in Pawtucket. She went on to become a seamstress, licensed hairdresser, hospital secretary and transporter, waitress, poll worker, and mother of four daughters, her proudest achievement.
She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Eugene T. Lefebvre VFW Post 1271, and a long-time member and officer of the tenant association at Wilfrid Manor senior housing in Central Falls, where she resided for the past 40 years.
Throughout her life, Stella greatly enjoyed her huge extended family, and loved becoming its matriarch. Some of her happiest times were spent at Rhode Island beaches, either with relatives and friends or on her own, sunning and swimming and riding the waves. In her later years, Stella was content with sewing, crocheting, reading, watching her favorite shows like Lawrence Welk, visiting with her children and grandchildren, and celebrating birthdays and holidays, especially Christmas, which she considered the best day of the year.
Stella is survived by two daughters, Gloria LaBounty of Seekonk, and Rosalinde Forget and her husband Roger, also of Seekonk; two sisters, Marge Pike of Pawtucket and Constance Johnson of Central Falls; five grandchildren: Kevin LaBounty and his wife Elizabeth of Norton MA, Dawn Rego and her husband John of Bristol RI, Grant Meehen and his wife Kerri of Rehoboth MA, Amber Smith and her husband William of Talking Rock GA, Michael Meehen and his wife Sherri of Warwick RI; six great-grandchildren: Carissa and Jared Rego, Alex Wall and Brenna Meehen, Logan and Lylah Meehen; one great-great-grandchild, Aaron Larivee; and numerous nieces and nephews.
