Antonio Manuel Conceição Monteiro was born on December 8, 1960, in the scenic town of Ponta do Sol, on the island of Santo Antão, Cape Verde. He was the eldest child of Faustino T. Monteiro and Joana V. Monteiro, and the devoted older brother to five siblings: Gil, Kalu, Teodora, Michelle, and Lena Monteiro.

In May 1975, Antonio and his family left Cape Verde and spent six months in Portugal before immigrating to the United States in November of that year, just months after Cape Verde gained its independence. Embracing a new chapter with optimism and courage, he adapted to his new environment while holding tightly to the values of his Cape Verdean heritage. With quiet determination, Antonio built a life rooted in purpose, family, and love.

Affectionately known as Tony, he was deeply family-oriented—a steady, selfless presence who poured into the lives of everyone around him. Whether through acts of service, encouragement, or simply his dependable presence, Tony showed up for his family in every way that mattered. As the eldest sibling, he embraced the role of guide and protector, offering love, wisdom, and unwavering support throughout the years.

Outside of family, Tony had two great passions: soccer and music. He was a lifelong fan of S.L. Benfica and proudly served his local soccer community as a dedicated referee for over 20 years. His commitment to the game extended far beyond the field—he was a mentor, a role model, and a beloved figure in the local leagues. Generations of players respected not just his calls, but his fairness, humility, and deep love for the sport.

Tony also found joy in music. He had a deep appreciation for the soulful sounds of morna, Cape Verde’s traditional music, which reminded him of home and spoke to the depth of his spirit. He was equally moved by the messages of peace, resilience, and unity in Bob Marley’s music, which mirrored his own values and approach to life.

Tony is survived by his beloved mother, Joana V. Monteiro; his siblings and their spouses, Victor Alexander and Carmen Monteiro; his cherished nieces and nephews, Carlton, Vivianne, Asha, Meena, and Ravi; and his great-nephew, Zalen Alexander. He was predeceased by his father, Faustino T. Monteiro.

He will be remembered for his loyalty, humility, and the deep love he had for his family and community. Tony’s legacy is one of quiet strength, enduring generosity, and the joyful rhythm of a life lived with passion, purpose, and grace.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 4th from 4pm-7pm in the Keefe Funeral Home, Five Higginson Ave. Lincoln. His funeral will be held Thursday, June 5th 2025 starting directly at Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 21 Traverse St. Providence, RI at 10am. Burial will follow in Swan Point Cemetery, Providence.
