He was the husband of the late Lois (Reis) Gomes.
He was a Navy Veteran of WWII.
Joaquin was the son of the late Francisco and Angelina (Santos) Gomes.
He worked over 50 years as a Longshoreman and former president of the Longshoreman's Association, former Commissioner of Human Rights, past president of the St. Martin de Porres Senior Center, member of the Fox Point Boys and Girls Club Alumni Association and of the Veterans Boxing Association, Ring 107.
He is survived by a daughter, Dawn Venter Olagbegi of East Providence, a sister, Mary Ballard, two brothers, Charles Gomes and Anthony Gomes, Five grandchildren, Annette Fells, Brandi Venter, Ebony Palmer, Kemi Olagbegi, Norma Dowdell, father in law of Doyin Olagbegi, seven great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Jose Gomes and Lloyd Waite, brother of the late Thomas, John, Joseph, and Francis Gomes, Etelvina Santos, Rose Santos and Alice Cardozo and grandfather of the late Lachelle Waite.
Calling hours will be held Saturday from 10:30am till noon followed by a service at noon in the Keefe Funeral Home, Five Higginson Ave, Lincoln. Burial with Military Honors will be in North Burial Ground, Providence.
