87, of Rand Street, passed on April 19th with his family by his side. He was the husband of the late Rita L. (Bilodeau) Sawyer.
Born in Central Falls, RI, a son of the late Albert and Agnes (Tremblay) Sawyer, Leo resided most of his life in Central Falls and was a communicant of the Holy Spirit Catholic Community Church.
He was an employee of the former Sayles Finishing Plant for 18 years and the former American Broadloom for 27 years retiring in 1987.
Leo was an army veteran of World War II serving as a forward observer Radioman with the 884th Field Artillery Battalion 70th United States Infantry Division in the Rhineland and Central Europe, earning two battle stars.
After the war he was transferred to the signal corps and assigned to the Nuremberg War Crime Trials until his discharge in May 1946.
He was a former coach and manager in the Central Falls Little League.
Leo is survived by two daughters, Janet Bowler of Cumberland, Rhode Island and Rose Batty of Lincoln, Rhode Island, six sons, Edmond Sawyer of Mattoon, Illinois, Paul Sawyer of Lilburn, Georgia, Rene Sawyer of West Greenwich, Rhode Island, Marc Sawyer of East Providence, Rhode Island, Gary Sawyer of Warwick, Rhode Island and Bruce Sawyer of Lincoln, Rhode Island; He is also survived by two brothers, George Sawyer of Largo, Florida and Albert Sawyer of Oceanside, California; 20 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late James Sawyer, Maurice Sawyer, Rita Sawyer and Rachel Desautel.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday April 22nd in Holy Spirit Parish, Dexter St, Central Falls at 11am. Burial with military honors will be in the RI Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be made to the Ralph J. Holden Scholarship Fund, 511 Mendon Rd, Cumberland, RI, 02864.
